BRIGHTON FINALS NIGHT - @ Romans on the 28th May 2008 MENS SINGLES : CHRIS ELLIOTT (STADIUM) v KEVIN TUNSTALL (THREE HORSESHOES) 10pm, Table 1 A great final in which Kevin did not miss in over 2 legs of bar billiards to win his second successive Brighton singles title. Chris batted first in the opener and went off with a very creditable 9,050 to take a 1-0 lead. Kevin, though, was not to be denied and hit two 15k breaks to leave Chris a mountain to climb in the equal breaks third leg. Chris was off on 1,000 but showed he could potentially win this title in the future. For Kevin he will look to emulate Harry Leeson's achievement in the 1970's of 3 titles in a row next year.
LADIES SINGLES : GINA SHERRATT (WINDMILL) V JEAN BRACKENRIDGE (ALBION) 10pm, Table 2 In one of the best ladies finals for some years, Gina beat Jean for her 6th ladies title and she retains the title she won last year. Both won their break games, Gina came through a tight decider.
MENS PLATE : ALAN BRACKENRIDGE (ALBION) V TIM SCOTNEY (DUKE OF WELLINGTON) 9pm, Table 2 Alan won his second plate adding to his 2005 triumph. He was on top form and came through more comfortably than expected in the end, winning both legs with 7k scores. A good couple of weeks for Alan winning the mixed doubles with Jean earlier in the night, and also the Lewes singles a fortnight earlier
LOWER DIVISION SINGLES : GARY MECHAN (MONTREAL) V JOHN PERRIN (DUKE OF WELLINGTON) 8pm, Table 2 Gary made up for his disappointment of last year with a 2-1 win over John Perrin. In a good quality lower division final, Gary went one down when he missed a 200 hole to win after John missed a shot at the 100 hole. Gary got the match level winning leg 2 by just over 1k. Perhaps fatigue set in during game 3, as John chances evaporated and a very happy Gary took the decider. For Gary a first lower division title but sadly for John a 4th loss in a final (2 singles, 2 masters).
OPEN DOUBLES : MARC CHIPMAN & NIGEL SENIOR (B TAP) v TONY JENNER & RIC CUNNINGHAM (WINDMILL) 9pm, Table 1 One stray shot from Tony Jenner was all it took for this doubles final to be over. Nigel's opening break in leg 1 of 5k turned out to be enough, and when Tony missed a ball off the side cushion to lose a 4k break in leg 2, Nigel made a match winning 4,500 break. A shame for Tony as he looked comfortable and a deciding leg was maybe what the match deserved (even if Nigel & Marc didn't want it to go 3 legs). A first doubles title for Nigel & Marc in their first attempt as partners.
MIXED DOUBLES : ALAN BRACKENRIDGE & JEAN BRACKENRIDGE (ALBION) V MICK POPE & SHEENA WOOD (STADIUM) 8pm, Table 1 Alan & Jean won their 5th Mixed Pairs final. It was a comfortable 2-0 win, Sheena & Mick never got going and didn't look like avenging their 2004 defeat.
LANDLORDS : BRAD WESCOTT (DUKE OF WELLINGTON) V ROY CHUTER (DUKE OF WELLINGTON) 9pm, Table 3 Roy successfully defended his landlords trophy in a match played the day after finals night due to Brad being called away. The scores suggest that the Romans table was its usual tough self, and the match went three games, with Roy winning narrowly in the decider.
