bulletBrighton Masters 2011
The Romans, Saturday 17th September 2011

Nigel Senior took his record fourth Brighton Masters title after beating last years champion Kevin Tunstall in the final. Kevin was asked to take first break but was off after scoring just 1,180. Nigel retrieved the break and was up to 11k+ with the bar about to drop but a loose shot took out the left hand white peg meaning Kev had that small advantage going into leg 2. Nigel made no repeat mistake, however, and sealed the win with a 9k opener.

The tournament invited the top 16 from the Brighton rankings as usual and the draw was seeded. All the top seeded players made it through round 1, although there were some close calls, Bill Kerr (seeded 6) edged out Alan Brackenridge (seeded 11) by 1,850. A bigger shock seemed in store when Mal Spier (seeded 7) was behind reserve player Matt Knight, who was ranked only 60th in the Brighton rankings, with only minutes left. Mal scrambled over the line to win by 1,620.

Nigel comfortably beat Alan Messer in their semi final, Kevin was run a lot closer by Mal,  who chasing 13k, broke down on 11k in reply. The other two top seeds went though as Chris Tupper (seeded 4) beat Kevin Hall (seeded 5) and the 2006 champion Ian Lelliott (seeded 3) beat Bill Kerr (seeded 6). This ensured the top 4 seeds making it through to the semi finals.

Kevin progressed to the final with an easy win over Ian and he made the days highest break of 14,600. Nigel had a far more testing semi final against Tupps, Nigel led by 5,500 going into leg 2, but despite the 1997 & 2008 champion having numerous chances he couldn't edge in front and Nigel secured his place in the final.

Nigel's 4th Masters title takes him to a record 10 Brighton singles titles overall (5 singles, 4 Masters and 1 Off the Spot) It is also a record 4th Brighton Masters which draws him clear of Steve Mariner and Jim Millward who are both on 3 titles each. Also this year in all of the 15 matches the highest seed was victorious, which is a first.....the ranking system must be working!

Many thanks to the Romans for being excellent new hosts for this event.
