bulletBrighton Masters 2010
The Atlas, Saturday 25th September 2010

Kevin Tunstall took his first Brighton Masters title after a sterling comeback to beat reigning champion Nigel Senior in a close final. Kevin, seeded 1, was asked to take first break against Nigel, the number 2 seed. Kevin was off early and Nigel built a lead of around 8k before offering a chance to Kevin which he took to go into leg 2 just in the lead. Nigel looked to kill off the match in leg 2 but he broke down on 6k on his opener and Kevin got the balls back at his second attempt and made a 9k break to seal the title.

The tournament invited the top 16 from the Brighton rankings as usual and the draw was seeded. Some high seeded players fell in the first round, Mick Pope (seeded 4) lost out to Dave France (seeded 13), Chris Tupper (seeded 6) in his 17th Masters lost to Ian Lelliott (seeded 11) and Charlie Cooper (seeded 8) lost to Dave Ingram (seeded 9).

The 1st and 2nd seeds both comfortably made it through their quarter finals with Kevin beating Dave Ingram and Nigel beating Mal Spier. The number 3 seed, Kevin Hall, went out at this stage to 2006 champion Ian Lelliott in a good match on table 1. In the other quarter final Ric Cunningham (seeded 5) did well to knock out Dave France to be the only player in the semi final who had not previously won the Masters.

The semi finals saw Kevin and Nigel book their places in the final, Ric succumbing at this point to Kevin and Ian losing out to Nigel but had the consolation of the days highest break with a 13.350 effort in Round 1.

Kevin's first Masters title takes him to 5 Brighton singles titles overall (3 singles, 1 Masters and 1 Off the Spot) making him the 8th Brighton player to reach 5 singles titles - but they have been all won since 2007! For Nigel, he narrowly missed out on his 4th Brighton Masters which would have drawn him clear of Steve Mariner and Jim Millward who are all on 3 titles each.

Many thanks to the Atlas for being excellent new hosts for this event.
