Team titles - Players

The Dyke Tavern (pictured above) is home to the two most successful teams in Brighton League's history. The Dyke A (current players Chris Tupper, Colin Smith, Kevin Simmons, Dave Reeves, Mick Winder and Charlie Cooper) have been together for over 30 years winning many league and TKO cups. The Dyke B (current players Terry Race, Terry Molloy, Mick Hall, Terry Coghlan and Doug Dawson) won most of their titles at the Albion but have been at the Dyke since the start of the 2006/07 season.

Players come and go from team to team but there is no doubt that 3 teams have dominated the Brighton Bar billiard scene in the last 30 years. The Dyke A, as already mentioned, have been together for over 30 years (starting at the Spread Eagle I believe) and have won league titles in the last 4 decades, the last one coming in 2004. The Dyke B played for over 20 years as the Albion D before moving to the Dyke in 2006. They hold the record for winning the most Team Knockouts with an amazing 6 wins in a row from 1984-89. The other dominant team ended their days sadly in 2006 as the Stadium "Dream team" C, but finished on a high with a league and cup double in their last season. This team was the first Brighton team to taste national success with 3 national titles in a row in the 1990's - lets hope they come back one day.

The current two dominant sides in Brighton are the Romans B (current players Richard Wooton, Nigel Senior, Chris Reeves, Gareth Lloyd, Marc Chipman and Steve Mariner) and the Three Horseshoes (current players Kevin Tunstall, Ian Lelliott, Mal Spier, Kevin Hall, Geoff Jukes, Martin Smith and Mark James), but they have a long way to go before matching the success of the top 3 sides. The Romans B have 2 league titles (in 2007 & 2008) and 2 TKO wins (2008 & 2009) and they emulated the Stadium's achievement by winning the national title in 2008. The Three Horseshoes have the one league title (2009) and one TKO trophy won in 2007, but had only formed in 2007 in a team put together by England number 1 Kevin Tunstall.

Here are some stats regarding these three great sides -

Other records

A very poor attempt at some photo manipulation on my part but here are the Stadium record scoring team. From left to right Jim Millward, Sue Mariner (ladies high home and away break record holder), Stu Mepham, Steve Mariner (mens high home and away break record holder) and Mark James.

Jim Millward 18,680 1,360 Chris Tupper *
Steve Mariner * 21,640 100 Colin Smith

Mark James * 22,140 0 Dave Reeves
Stuart Mepham 13,030 2,650 Mick Winder *
5 92,560 5,270 0

This equates to 18,512 per player giving away 3 breaks to the then Brighton Premier division champions. This record may take some beating. However both Jim Millward and Steve Mariner touched up when they had enough due to the importance of the clash, so the final score could have been higher. Mark's 22,140 was his highest ever break at that time.

Player Rankings records

The Brighton Rankings were devised by Chris Tupper and implemented for the 1992/93 season. The top 16 each year would play off for the prestigious Brighton Masters title. Modifications to the system have been made over the years, a big overhaul coming in 2006/07, with many of the Sussex Competitions being eliminated from the system, and the emphasis being more placed on Brighton Bar Billiards. However, it takes a great season to finish top of the pile and only 6 men have become Brighton number 1 in 15 years of rankings. Nigel Senior and Steve Mariner have both achieved this feat 4 times.
