Brighton Off-the-Spot Singles 2005
Windmill, Southwich. Sunday 9th October
 
The Brighton Off-the-Spot singles was played at the Windmill in Southwick. The 20 players were drawn into 4 groups of 5. Each player plays the other 4 people in their group. All matches best of 1 leg at this stage. The winner & Runner up in each group go into the main competition Q-Final. The 3rd and 4th place go into the Plate Q-Final. Last in each group miss out. After the group stages there were some surprising absences from the main field. Last years finalists Chris Tupper and Mark James both failed to make the Q-Finals of the main competition, as did our regular Jersey entrant, Harry Barbet. Nigel Senior was playing some fine Billiards with breaks of 17k and 19k. In the Q-Finals, matches are best of 2 legs. Nigel Senior kept up his fine form seeing off Jean Over. Jean came through a tough group which included Steve Mariner, Chris Tupper and the vastly experienced Charlie Cooper. The crafty old fox, Colin Green edged through via Gina Sherratt. Steve Mariner easily overwhelmed a nervous Glenn Chubb who only narrowly scraped through the group stages. Chris Reeves marched into the semi's by ending Rick Cunningham's day. In the semi finals Colin Green had numerous chances to beat Nigel Senior, but it was Nigel who clung on for the win. The other semi saw Steve Mariner take a 6k lead into the second leg, but an early  mistake allowed Chris in and he killed off the match with a gritty 11k break. The first leg of the final was a see-saw match, neither player picking up the table, but in leg 2 Chris got going and rolled in a fine opening break to capture his first Brighton off-the-spot title. Alan Brackenridge, runner-up in the plate last year, went one better to win the plate competition.
