Nigel Senior completed a unique double by adding his first off the spot title to the Brighton Masters title he won a day earlier. Nigel was unbeaten throughout the group stages before facing old foe Chris Tupper in the quarters. A 9k lead would normally be enough on the tricky speed cloth table but Tupps roared back with 9,500 before leaving Nigel a last chance. Nerves were jangling but Nigel eventually sunk the last two balls to win by 300. After the quarters it could be said semis and the final were more straight-forward, beating Charlie Cooper in the semis and then last years Masters runner up Alan Brackenridge in the final. Alan lost his opening 1,500 in the first leg of the final and never really recovered, and the opening 6k break by Nigel in leg 2 was more than enough for the win.

19 players showed up for the tournament and were split into 4 groups. The top 2 would progress to the quarter finals, 3rd and 4th place guaranteed a plate berth. The round robin section of the day threw up some shocks, with potential winners Mark James, Steve Mariner and Ian Lelliott all being eliminated into the plate. Indeed in Group 1 Chris Tupper was fortunate to go through in head to head count back, with Jean Brackenridge missing out despite outscoring Chris. Chris was joined by Alan Brackenridge who topped the group with 3 wins. Aggregates decided group 2, with Chris Reeves and Charlie Cooper going through at the expense of Alan Messer. Young Chris breathed a heavy sigh of relief as the double champion only just beat already eliminated Mark James in his last group game. Nigel Senior won group 3, but wouldn't have done had Kev Stoner scored 20 more points. Kev did perform more heroics with wins over Steve Mariner and Ian Lelliott and finished runner up. group 4 was considered a bit weaker and with only 4 players - Gary Mechan and Kev Hall progressing from the last group.

In the quarter finals Kevin Stoner's antics were stopped by Alan Brackenridge. Chris Reeves hit form against Kevin Hall, and Gary Mechan succumbed to Charlie Cooper. Nigel beat Tupps in that other epic quarter final. Chris Reeves will be glad to see the back of the speed cloth as he lost out to Alan Brackenridge in the semi, after losing the masters final on it, and this set up the final between Alan and Nigel. Chris Reeves did have the consolation of the high break prize with quite a low 9,400, only counting in the 1 leg games. Two former champions contested the plate final, Steve Mariner beating Mark James.

Many thanks to Steve and Jean for putting together the weekend.
