Chris Reeves took his
third off the spot title in 4 years. He made it through the group of death
containing reigning champion Nigel Senior, two time champion Steve Mariner and
Worthing off the spot champion Ian Lelliott, plus a former Brighton Singles
winner Alan Messer. A good quarter final win over Charlie Cooper set him up
against Jean Brackenridge in the semi final. Jean had already made a 10k score
(despite losing 4k) on table 3, and continued that fine form setting a 9k lead
on the same table. Chris was up to the task and made a 14,710 break, which was
the highest of the day. The final was a bit more comfortable for Chris, where he
beat Martin Smith who was contesting his first Brighton final. Martin had just
beaten Masters runner up Mal Spier and then Steve Mariner but struggled to stop
Chris, who was in full flow after beating Jean.
19 players showed up for the tournament and were split into 4 groups. The top 2
would progress to the quarter finals, 3rd and 4th place guaranteed a plate
berth. The round robin section of the day threw up some shocks, with potential
winners Mark James, Nigel Senior, Chris Tupper and Ian Lelliott all being eliminated into the
plate. Group 1 was the aforementioned group of death and saw the elimination of
Nigel Senior and Ian Lelliott. Chris Reeves and Steve Mariner made it through on
3 wins each. Group 2 was won by Jean Brackenridge and Martin Smith made it
through as runner up with 3 very close winning matches. Group 3 was the 4 player
group and Mark Senior made it through to the quarter finals for the first time
in 9 attempts with impressive wins over Mark James and Charlie Cooper. Mark and
Charlie played off for the other quarter final spot on the tricky table 4.
Charlie somehow kept a 300 break which forced Mark into going for the 200 at the
end which he missed putting Charlie through. Group 4 was dominated by Mal Spier
and he was the only player unbeaten in the group games. Tony Jenner joined him
as a qualifier with 3 wins eliminating the masters champ, Chris Tupper.
The two eventual
finalists Chris Reeves and Martin Smith made it through their quarter finals
against Charlie Cooper and Mal Spier respectively. However it was Steve Mariner
that was most impressive at this stage, beating Mark Senior by 26k, and Jean
defeated Tony Jenner in a tough game on table 4.
Steve then
mysteriously lost form against Martin in the semi, and Jean was beaten by Chris
despite setting that impressive first leg target. The plate was won by Chris
Tupper adding to his Masters success from the day before. He beat old sparring
partner Ian Lelliott in that final.
Chris Reeves now
joins a certain Jim Millward as the only 3 time winner of this event, a
remarkable feat considering he has done it in a total of 6 attempts.
