*Bob Hall took Mark James' place in the plate

Ian Lelliott won his first Brighton Off the Spot Singles title with a win over 2 time champion Steve Mariner in the final. Ian was unbeaten in his group matches to progress to the quarter finals where he beat the 2007 champion Nigel Senior. A win over last years finalist, Dave Ingram, followed in the semi final. Fittingly Steve was the only other unbeaten player when he and Ian met in the final. Ian was asked to take first break and it was a bit nip and tuck but Steve took a 910 lead with his break to come in leg 2. Steve went for a tough first split which took out the white peg handing Ian an early chance, which he took to secure the title. Steve had some consolation with the high break prize (group matches only) with a 12,320 break.

20 players showed up for the tournament and were split into 4 groups. The top 2 would progress to the quarter finals, 3rd and 4th place guaranteed a plate berth. The round robin section of the day threw up tough groups. Group 1 contained last years champion Kevin Tunstall but he struggled to match last years performance and could only finish 4th behind his wife Hayley. Jim Greensted and Paul Barnett qualified from this group. Ian Lelliot dominated Group 2 but it was very close for 2nd as Kevin Stoner, 2003 champion Mark James and Neil Higgins were equal on 2 wins apiece. Kevin Stoner got through on aggregate by just 180 points from Mark James - just as well as Mark was on the train home convinced he was already out! Dave Ingram and Chris Tupper progressed from Group 3 each scoring 3 wins. Steve Mariner and Nigel Senior made it through Group 4 with the biggest aggregates of the day each recording a 9k+ average leaving their opponents little chance in that group.

The two eventual finalists Ian Lelliott and Steve Mariner made it through their quarter finals against Nigel Senior and Kevin Stoner. Jim Greensted and Dave Ingram made it through their quarters with very close matches - Jim beat Chris Tupper and Dave beat Paul Barnett to ensure all group winners making it to the semi finals. both semi finals were fairly one sided as Ian beat Jim and Steve beat Dave. The plate was won by Martin Smith in a close game against Hayley Tunstall.

Many thanks to the Atlas for hosting a very successful day of bar billiards.
